Solid Waste & Recycling

City contractors collect trash at the curbside once a week. See the Curbside Collection Schedule to determine what day of the week trash is collected in your area. Trash and recycling are picked up curbside only on those properties that are on a public highway.  Residents on a private road may hire a private firm to collect their trash, drop off their solid waste at the City's transfer station on Meredith Center Road or bring their trash to a public highway for collection.

Laconia residents who use the transfer station must have a either a day pass or a dump sticker.  Both are available at the City Clerk's Office at City Hall.

Mandatory Recycling Ordinance

The disposal of trash into landfills is expensive. To help protect the environment, reuse useful materials and cut costs, Laconia has adopted a mandatory recycling ordinance.

Residents and businesses MUST recycle to have their waste collected. You may choose curbside recycling or remote recycling (or both).

Curbside Recycling:

Laconia offers every-other-week collection of eligible recyclables on specified collection routes. See the Curbside Pick Up Schedule to determine which weeks the recycling gets collected.

No sorting is necessary. All materials including paper, cardboard, glass, metal and plastic* can all go in the same container, Any rigid container clearly marked "Recycling" is acceptable. Public Works has recycling stickers available for your container free of charge.

*Please do not try to recycle plastic bags or place recycling in plastic bags. These bags clog the single stream sorting systems. If there are too many in a load, it is sent to a landfill instead of being recycled.

Remote Recycling:

If you prefer to deliver your recyclables to a drop off facility while still having your trash picked up curbside, get a free "Remote Recycler"  sticker from Public Works. Attach the sticker on your trash container so that the trash collectors know that you are complying with the mandatory recycling ordinance.

Recycling may be dropped off at the following locations:

  • The Weirs Community Center parking lot
  • Behind the old City Garage at 257 Messer Street
  • Lindsey Court -- across from the Memorial Park Clubhouse
  • Laconia Transfer Station
